Glass pipelines in chemical process units: components, fittings and installation

Aethex Industries · Published 2026-09-03 · Updated 2026-09-03 · 3 min read

Glass pipelines are used in chemical process units when operators need to see flow, colour and fouling, and when the fluid and duty are compatible with the glass and gasket materials you specify. This note lists components, what belongs on an isometric, and installation issues that cause punch-list delays. Aethex Industries manufactures and supplies pipe and fittings from Mumbai; we do not claim a licensed construction service on this page. Expert review recommended.

Components on a typical bill of materials

A complete glass line is more than straight pipe. Glass pipelines and fittings include pipelines, bends, tees, reducers, sight glasses, valves and flanges. Sight glasses that nobody can reach, and valves that sit in the roof space, look fine on CAD and fail in operation. Place them where a person can see colour and isolate a section.

Piece marks should match the isometric. Mixed unmarked spools on site are how the wrong reducer is erected. Custom laterals and odd reducers are custom glassware or custom pipeline assemblies, not leftovers from a catalogue.

What the isometric should carry

Nominal bore, end type, lengths, elevations, and design temperature and pressure as the project states them. Fluid class if you are allowed to share it. Support locations in principle, even if the steel is by others. Photographs or rubbings of existing metal flanges prevent the classic unmatched-drilling problem.

We will not invent ratings for every bore on a blog. If the project data sheet has numbers, send them for technical review. Vacuum lines, pumped lines and gravity drains are different mechanical problems; say which you have.

Installation considerations (for your contractor)

Glass cannot be hung like schedule carbon steel. Point loads, missing bellows, and thermal expansion into a dead stop crack fittings. The erector should have handled glass before, or should be briefed. Packing and identification from the manufacturer can be planned around that — tell us who is installing.

Supports, guides and anchors are a site design. Coupling torque, gasket type and cleanliness at the flange face belong in the installer’s procedure. Aethex can discuss how pieces are packed; we do not remotely supervise torque from a marketing site.

Statutory approvals, hot work permits and line-breaking remain the plant’s. Replacement spools for a running unit need a sample or drawing of the existing piece, including any non-standard face.

Connection to process equipment

Stills, filters and reactors at either end of the line should share a flange or coupling standard. Quote process glassware and reactors on the same enquiry when they mate to the pipe. Brochure work includes glass pipeline installations for chemical process units — treat that as the market, not as a copy of your isometric.

Enquiry checklist

Bore list, isometric or sketch, flange photographs, fluid notes, vacuum or pumped, and whether the job is a new line or a replacement. Related pages: chemicals industry, process industries, contact.

This article does not give support-span tables, bellows selection charts, or seismic criteria. Those are engineering deliverables. Conservative practice is to send the drawing pack and let review say if glass is the wrong material.
