How to choose a jacketed glass reactor for lab-to-pilot scale-up

A jacketed glass reactor is chosen when a batch needs heating or cooling through a service fluid and the team still wants to see the mass. Moving from a flask to a jacketed vessel, and later toward a pilot plant, is less about picking a catalogue litre number and more about writing down duty, connections and what will sit on the lid. This note is for chemists and process engineers in pharmaceutical, chemical and R&D groups in India. It is conservative, marked for expert review, and is not a design standard.

Start from the duty, not from a brand

Write the working volume you actually run, not the total flask volume if you never fill it. Note solvents and solids in the language your process group already uses. State whether vacuum distillation, slight pressure, or only atmospheric work is involved. Aethex Industries will not invent a pressure rating for marketing; if your drawing already states one, that figure is reviewed rather than repeated as a claim.

Heating and cooling should name the utility you have: water, oil, or another fluid your circulator already uses. Jacket connections that do not match the circulator waste time on adapters. If the lab today uses a mantle on a flask, say so — the jump to a jacket is a utility decision as much as a glass decision.

Lid, nozzles and stirring

Count nozzles before you fall in love with a vessel outline. Addition, condenser, thermowell, dip pipe and spare often compete for space on a small lid. If an overhead stirrer is required, the coupling, baffle need and shaft material belong in the enquiry. We do not publish a universal stirrer-speed table. Your mixing duty (slurry, low viscosity, gas dispersion) should be described in plain language.

Joint and flange standards must be named. A laboratory spherical joint on a condenser and a plant flange on the vessel will need an adapter. If the next step is a pilot plant, send the lab drawing with the pilot enquiry so custom engineering can keep the same language of connections. Condensers, receivers and the rest of the assembly

A reactor is rarely purchased alone. Reflux condensers, addition funnels and receivers should be specified with area only if you have already calculated it; otherwise describe vapour load in practical terms (solvent, batch time, vacuum). Distillation as a unit operation may belong under process glassware rather than on the kettle lid.

Supports and frames matter as soon as the vessel leaves a heating mantle on a bench. Pilot assemblies need a sentence about who is erecting the skid. Aethex manufactures and supplies glass assemblies; steelwork and instruments are in scope only when you write them in.

A useful pack is: working volume, jacket utility, nozzle sketch, stirrer note, temperature window as you understand it, vacuum or pressure in your words, and any drawing or photograph of the current flask set-up. If you are still on flasks only, start with laboratory glassware and keep joint standards consistent for the day you add a jacketed vessel. One manufacturer across that path is the point of laboratory-to-pilot-plant supply, not a promise that every flask geometry exists as a reactor.
