Setting up a distillation assembly for R&D scale-up

Aethex Industries · Published 2026-09-05 · Updated 2026-09-05 · 2 min read

R&D scale-up distillation is usually a batch still: a pot, a head or short column, a condenser, a vacuum take-off if used, and receivers. The company brochure mentions distillation assemblies for that job. This article explains what to write on the enquiry so process glassware can be quoted without invented condenser areas or theoretical plates. Expert review; not a process design package.

What the assembly is for

Typical aims in pharma development, specialty chemicals and chemical R&D are solvent recovery, stripping a reaction mass, or a simple fractionation before a route is handed to a pilot plant. Visibility of colour and foaming is why glass is chosen. Glass is not automatically correct for abrasive slurries or duties your materials engineer has already ruled out.

If the still sits on a jacketed reactor, specify both together so the vapour neck and condenser joints match. If the still is a separate pot, say so — adapters appear when people assume a reactor lid is a still head.

Information that belongs in the first sketch

Batch size or the charge you actually distill, heating method (mantle, bath, other), whether vacuum is used, and condenser utility (water temperature you have, not a hope). Describe vapour load in practical terms if you have not calculated area: solvent, time, and whether you reflux or take off. Receivers, drains and vacuum traps should appear on the same sketch.

Column packing, plate count and HETP will not be supplied as blog numbers. If your process group already chose a packed height, put it on the drawing. If they have not, say that the assembly is a simple head. Over-specifying a research still as if it were a production column wastes review time.

Vacuum, supports and connections

Vacuum stills need traps and a clear statement that the pump and tubing are by others unless you ask us to include listed glass traps. Supports for a tall assembly are not an afterthought; R&D frames differ from process-unit steel. Pipelines appear when distillate or residue is piped away rather than poured.

Joint standards should match the rest of the R&D glassware language. See the R&D industry page for why mixed joints hurt scale-up.

Custom versus standard

Non-standard heads, unusual receivers and replacements are custom. The path is drawing or sample, technical review, manufacturing, quality check, delivery. Quality is against the sketch, not against a textbook McCabe–Thiele diagram.

Safety language (non-exhaustive)

Distillation involves heat, solvents and sometimes vacuum. Site SOP, electrical classification and glass inspection before heat-up are yours. This article does not replace a HAZOP. Cracked glass and unmatched clamps are common laboratory incidents; caring for laboratory glassware covers inspection habits.

How to enquire

Send the sketch, charge size, heating and vacuum notes, and whether the still must mate to an existing reactor. Related: custom glassware, quality, contact. Aethex Industries will quote glass assemblies from Mumbai; steel, vacuum pumps and instruments only if they are written into the scope.
